FAQ

What is thalassotherapy?

Thalassotherapy uses the goodness of the maritime environment (seawater, seaweed, sand). The curative properties of seawater, the maritime climate, marine mud, seaweed and sand have been recognized since ancient times. Nowadays they are often used for therapeutic purposes but also to aid general well-being.

What is the principle behind thalassotherapy?
Thalassotherapy derives most of its health benefits from seawater, which is particularly rich in mineral salts and trace elements. The water is taken from the open sea before being heated (to between 31 and 37°C). This makes it easier for the human body to absorb these elements. In water heated to 37°C, the skin can take in trace elements via the process of vasodilatation ten times more quickly than during a normal swim in the sea.

Moreover, taking a hot dip has a soothing effect and helps procure a sense of general well-being.

Seawater is the crucial ingredient in thalassotherapy treatment. Its chemical and physical properties are the foundation of the effectiveness of hydrotherapy treatments such as whirlpool baths, showers, water jets...
Seaweed is gathered fresh and refined in a beauty research laboratory specializing in marine-derived ingredients using processes that safeguard all their natural properties. It is then used in treatments and products. These products are concentrates, rich in minerals and vitamins that are essential to the proper functioning of our body. They are applied in the form of a wrap, mask or poultice.

What is the difference between ‘Thalassotherapy treatment’ and a ‘Spa’?

Thalassotherapy uses the goodness of ingredients from the maritime environment (seawater, sand, seaweed and marine mud) for curative purposes, as well as to procure a sense of intense relaxation.
Seawater is rich in mineral salts (calcium, magnesium and potassium ions...) and in trace elements (gold, copper, zinc, silver, manganese, iodine...). When seawater is heated (as is always the case in thalassotherapy), these elements can be transferred from the water and into our body, through the skin. In this way, seawater helps the body restock with mineral salts and trace elements, insufficient levels of which can induce fatigue and a whole range of other problems.

The Spa is a place to relax, to enjoy beauty treatments, to pamper oneself and to enjoy a range of individually-tailored, creative, revitalizing treatments that will reawaken your senses.

What is the ideal length of stay in a Thalassotherapy centre?

As long as you wish - it depends on your budget and the free time at your disposal. In order to really unwind, let go and let your body rebuild its trace elements and mineral salt levels, we recommend a 6-day stay as being ideal. A shorter break will allow to you relax, and after two or three days, to return home in top form, but you shouldn’t expect to see major therapeutic benefits from this length of stay, this isn’t what it’s designed for!

Besides the choice of the centre or institute, the geographical setting of the centre is fundamental:
If you want a bracing, invigorating climate, the Atlantic coast is best. This type of climate is recommended for people who want to give themselves a boost in an invigorating setting.
Above all, remember to book as early as possible as school holiday periods are often very busy…

How is a thalassotherapy break at Hélianthal Saint-Jean-de-Luz organized?

In most cases, you can arrive on whatever day you wish and can stay for as long as you want, the thalassotherapy centre being open 7 days a week.

Treatment sessions are organized around a half-day timetable, alternating between morning and afternoon sessions. Depending on what you want to do, you may spend the remainder of the day resting, enjoy the range of sporting or more relaxing activities that the centre offers, or else explore or reacquaint yourself with the Basque Country.

Choose your accommodation and catering options.

The hotel sited within the centre itself is the most convenient option: You can stay in your bath robe all day long, walk out of your bedroom and take the lift directly to the Thalassotherapy centre…
The half-board ‘Delicious Dishes’ option is the most popular package. This allows you to enjoy the restaurant’s cuisine but also gives you the chance to eat out locally.
The full-board ‘Delicious Dishes’ option is the most convenient solution. We take care of everything for you, so this option enables you to have a complete break from your normal daily routine.
The full-board ‘Delicious Diets’ option means you can combine healthy eating with epicurean pleasure. You also benefit from our dietitian’s advice.
You are free to enjoy all of the services available at the Hélianthal thalassotherapy centre even if you are staying elsewhere in Saint-Jean-de-Luz or the surrounding area.

What do I need to pack?

We advise you bring two swimming costumes (bathing trunks and thongs are not allowed).
Sportswear (& shoes) to gain access to the Fitness Centre and also for other activities that it may be possible to participate in the surrounding area.
Sandals/flip-flops must be worn in the centre.
